ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
Our Safe Place ... As young children, we often had special objects that we liked to carry with us all the time. A favourite blanket or stuffed animal. Having that item with us made us feel safe and calm because it was always there, no matter what we were feeling. It was something we could cling onto whether we felt happy, sad, scared, or angry.
As we matured, we outgrew the stuffed animals and blankets that we used to cling to. But they were soon replaced by our phones, Netflix, chocolate, and a mirage of other things that we turned to for distraction and comfort when things in our lives felt out of control.
While there's nothing wrong with enjoying some chocolate and Netflix in moderation, the Bible reminds us that our true place of safety and security is not found in things, but in the Lord.
Psalm 91:2 says, I will say of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God; on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I [confidently] trust. (Amplified version)
In John 14:26, in the Amplified version, the Holy Spirit is described as our Comforter and our Counselor. The One who comes alongside.
He is our safe place.
This week, when we are tempted to turn to material things for comfort, let's seek the Lord and let the Holy Spirit come alongside us and be our refuge and our fortress - our safe place.
"I will say of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God; on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I [confidently] trust." Psalm 91:2 (AMP)
