ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
Seeds of Peace Peace is a very important topic in the Bible.
Psalm 34:14 exhorts us to depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
In Matthew 5:9, Jesus said, Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
We see that pursuing peace is important to our walk with God. But do we fully understand what that means? Our initial definition of peace would probably refer to an absence of war or strife in the world. We may also think of peace as the goal of interactions in the world we live in. A gathering or conversation between friends, family, or co-workers going well and having a lack of conflict would give us all a sense of peace. Especially in the days that we live in, a picture of pursuing peace in our minds might equate to pursuing ways to have less stress and conflict in our lives. While the Biblical definition of peace does include those concepts, it goes so much deeper than that.
The Hebrew word for peace, Shalom, carries with it the concept of wholeness or completeness, as well as health, safety, soundness in mind, and prosperity. It's interesting to note that Shalom is also used as a greeting in the Hebrew language. When people meet each other, they immediately say Shalom, speaking wholeness and soundness over the person they are interacting with.
Now, let's look at the following verse with this in mind:
Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. James 3:18
When we sow seeds of peace into the lives and circumstances around us, we are sowing seeds of wholeness and completeness into every area of life. And this verse also says that these seeds of peace will bring forth a harvest of the fruit of righteousness!
What seeds of peace can you sow this week into your family, your work, and those around you?
"And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."James 3:18 (ESV)
